Gold, silver, rose gold, copper, matt black and so on.....

SO MANY OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM!

Whilst having metals which match is an easy way to ensure cohesion mixing metal finishes across hardware, lighting, furniture and other finishes is a great way to add depth a character to a space. Deciding on which metals ought to be applied to a space together can be daunting so here’s 5 tips on how to achieve a mixed-metal look you’ll love.

Pro Tip 1

ONE PRIMARY METAL

A space with metal finishes distributed 50/50 or into thirds can make the space feel chaotic. It’s important to focus on one metal finish for the majority of the room and then select other finishes to complement it. When choosing your primary metal opt for one which reflects the style of the room; satin nickel for example can work well in a traditional space whereas a matt black finish can provide a modern feel.

Brushed or satin metal finishes can be easier to mix than polished finishes so bear this in mind when selecting your primary metal.

COMPLIMENTAR METALS AS ACCENTS

Your primary metal ought to make up around 60-75% of the finishes in a space with 2 other metals used for the accents. When selecting your accent metals try to pick ones with similar colour undertones to ensure cohesion. Metals such as stainless steel, chrome and other silver metals have cool undertones whereas brass, gold, nickel and copper provide a warmer look. If you did want to choose metals with contrasting undertones ensure the third metal you choose bridges the gap between the two.

Pro Tip 3

EXPERIMENT WITH FINISHES

Metals come in a variety of finishes; antiqued, matte, satin, brushed or polished. Softer finishes (such as matt, satin or brushed) are easiest to mix, however contrasting the finishes can add more depth to a pairing. Combining 2 high-shine, polished finishes can result in a very glamorous look so steer clear of this if that isn’t what you’re going for.

Pro Tip 4

SPREAD THE METALS THROUGHOUT

When distributing your metals be sure to spread them through the whole space, following the hierarchy of metals to determine how much of each finish should be used. This could mean in a kitchen you choose your cabinet hardware in your primary metal finish and go for an accent metal on the faucet.

Pro Tip 5

FOLLOW YOUR HEART!

When choosing your finishes pick what you love! Don’t feel pressured to select something just because it is on trend, opt for metals which reflect your style and complement your existing paint colours and surfaces.
